Hello, my name is Becki. My story isn’t the average, “I grew up a “normal” size and as I became an adult I packed on the pounds”. I didn’t grow up average and never experienced what “skinny or slim” was. From a young age I started trying diets everything from Weight Watchers to calorie counting to slim fast. Nothing worked to help my weight problems. Eventually I began to research weight loss surgery and decided it was the best option for treatment of my obesity.
In my research I looked at the options between gastric bypass, lap-band, and vertical sleeve surgeries. I knew I wanted to be very educated about all three options prior to making a decision about which was the right option for my life. Additionally, in March of 2010 I went to several weight loss surgery seminars including one by Dr. Wagner. Ultimately, I found Dr. Wagner’s seminar to be the most informative and involved. After seeing Dr. Wagner in consultation and researching his practice I knew he was the correct surgeon for me.
Dr. Wagner performed my RNY Gastric Bypass on June 28, 2010. Over the last year I have gone from 424 lbs. to 194 lbs., which is a loss of 230 lbs. I am quick to tell people this surgery was the start of my new life and I’m never looking back. I went from couch potato to gym rat. In December 2010 I began a running program and set a goal to run a complete 5K (3.11 miles). It was hard, but I was dedicated and determined to do something big with my life. Even though I grew up an athlete I was never a runner and was always told I’d never be a runner. In May of 2011 I ran my first ever 5K from start to finish and came in under my personal goal of 45 minutes. I completed the run in 44:02. I am now over a year post-op and continue to exercise and run weekly. In addition to running I bike, swim, lift weights, and use various gym equipment including bosu ball and kettle bells. I have energy and spark I never knew was inside me. Each day I wake up thankful for the gift of life and continue to push to be the best me. I believe if you put all you have into starting over; the world is yours for the taking. I believe in reaching for the starts and continue to set new goals for my life. I am registered to run my first 6K in September 2011 and plan to compete in a mini-triathlon sometime next spring.
I have found a whole new person underneath all the heartache and misery I grew up living. For the first time in my 31 years of life I can say I’m happy, healthy, active, and having fun. I can shop “normal” stores and enjoy putting on my size 14’s rather than the 32’s I began in. Oh and I find it amazingly wonderful to finally experience being called “skinny and slim”.
